Youth Development Initiatives
promoting Education for All with an emphasis on reproductive health
Youth Development Initiatives was established in the year 2002. It is registered by the Sokoto State Government and registration under the Federal Government is in progress.
The vision of the organization - An Educated Society
MISSION: To promote Education for all, reproductive Health, Gender equity and HIV/AIDS reduction through sensitization, Mobilization and Enlightenment of youth and women in the society.
FOCUS: Education, HIV/AIDS, Gender equity.
TARGET GROUP: Out of school youth and women, less privileged children (especially Girl child)
STRATEGIES:
- Participatory method in training, Monitoring and Evaluation.
- Sensitization, Enlightenment and Mobilization on reproductive health and HIV/AIDS, drug abuse, girl child education and gender equality.
- Community development project and training.
- Engage in Networking with other civil organization and government carrying out programmes in line with our focus area such as education, reproductive health and HIV/AIDS, drug abuse, human and skill development training.
- Advocacy and lobbying.

Some of our activities include:
- YODI has carried out a sensitization and enlightment campaign on HIV and AIDS - mode of transmission and prevention to different youth group, out of school and partially in school in Sokoto State of Nigeria in the year 2003.
- YODI has successfully conducted a four day EFA/CSACEFA programme with series of activities to mark the Global Action week in April 2005 with the theme: “Educate To Eradicate Poverty”
- YODI has conducted extra mural lessons for ten weeks to out of school youth preparing for WASSCE/NECO & JAMB Exams in the year 2004 in Sokoto State of Nigeria.
- YODI has carried out an advocacy visits to State House of Assembly on issues of gender mainstreaming in July 2005.
- YODI has carried out an advocacy visit to Traditional and Religion Leaders in Sokoto State in April 2005.
- YODI has carried out awareness campaign on the prevention of HIV&AID for the women in PURDAH led by women facilitators.
- YODI has carried out Female peer group meeting on the prevention of HIV&AIDS in tudun wada area Sokoto in the year 2004.
- The organization has also conducted a zip-up campaign where we used the forum to enlighten the youth on the importance of abstinence in July 2005.
- YODI is working with Mechanic group on awareness and prevention of HIV&AIDS in Shara Area and Ahmadu Bello Way Area Sokoto State January 2005 to date.
- YODI has conducted research on women situation analysis in Sokoto State in July 2005.
- National Coalition Affirmative Action (NCAA), YODI has successfully formed women group, Market women to sponsor private bill on Gender and Equal opportunities in Sokoto State – this is an ongoing project.
- Advocacy visits to State House of Assembly to lobby for a law guiding the removal of girl child from school and not allowing her to continue her education after marriage.
- Follow up for the passage of UPE Bill in the state House of Assembly.

ONGOING PROJECTS
- Enhancing Girl Basic Education in Northern Nigeria (EGBENN) NOVIB in partnership with Actionaid International Nigeria. A three (3) year project 2005-2007
- Promoting reproductive and sexual health and HIV/AIDS in Nigeria (PRSHH) in partnership with Actionaid International Nigeria / Society for Family Health Project (“Make We Talk”) for the youth age group 18 years to 24. Chosen two sites for intervention (Tashar Illela Mechanis site & Tsohuwar Kasuwa) Sokoto State.
- Research on Financial and Management of Universal Basic Education (UBE) in Nigeria under CEF/CSACEFA/Action Aid Project.
- Citizen Forum For Constitutional Reform (CFCR)
- Focal organization
- Pay advocacy visits to religious leaders and traditional rulers
- Constitute committee such as media, legal and public hearing
- Mobilizing grassroots: at community level to make input for constitutional reformation.
