Our organisation concentrates on the environment - considering that Sokoto is near the Sahara desert. The state is very dry and in recent times, the weather has continued to get hotter.
There is no effort by the government to decrease the effect of desertification. Gandu has a tree nursery and we use the seedlings from here to distribute to farmers.
In the year 2003 our organization hosted a VSO volunteer - an environment specialist who helped the organisation in training of our members in various methods of taking care of the seedlings, distribution and advocacy.
We are also working on a programme that will take care of plastic papers. In Sokoto State, in fact in the whole of Nigeria, there is no proper way of disposing of plastic bags and you can see them floating everywhere.
