The Almajiri Education Foundation

working with street children

A former street child started our foundation - he educated himself and is now working with the Ministry of Education as High School teacher.

In Sokoto there are many street children especially young boys. “Almajiri” is a word borrowed from Arabic for someone who leaves his home in search of knowledge in Islamic religion. In the ideal situation, the communities should support these children as they leave their families to become a servant of Allah.

Unfortunately this has not been the case in Sokoto and many young boys are leaving their homes only to end up in the streets begging. They have no one to turn to. Voluntary Service Overseas (VSO) provided funds to our foundation to build a center for the boys. The center is quite small and the number of children is huge and not all can be taken in at the moment.
